How did you become interested in the advertising field?
As a consumer, I am interested in how certain aspects of advertising catches my eye, as others do not. My interests in advertising are mainly on how to advertise to specific audience members and how this is beneficial. Being aware of these aspects of media and advertising sparked my interest.
What is/was your favorite advertising course/professor?
My favorite course so far has been Digital Design and Animation, where Steve Kolbe, one of the best professors I have had, taught us the basics of After Effects.
What is your favorite aspect of advertising?
The creativity of well-done ads is one of my favorite parts of advertising. I am constantly amazed at the creativity and originality some advertisers come up with. Both effective and eye-catching, these ads are also great pieces of artwork.
Describe a typical day in your life?
A typical weekday usually involves me going to classes, working, doing homework as well as spending time with my family and friends. Soon, I will be adding this internship to the list of typical things done during my day.
What are some challenges you face?
One of my main challenges is saying no. I tend to take on too many tasks and inevitably over-working myself. I'm slowly realizing that I can't do everything I want to do, at least at once, and focusing on the things that either need to get done or are beneficial to me moving forward in my school and career.
What's your favorite ad?
It's hard to say what my favorite ad is but I can tell you my favorite type of ad is when you have to take a second look at it. If it's a billboard or TV ad and you're not quite sure what it is, you have to concentrate hard on it. Focusing your attention to it and forcing you to figure out what the ad is. This way, you're more likely to remember what the ad was about.
What do you like to do on the weekends?
Weekends are usually spent sleeping in and spending time with people I don't see during the week. I do photography and graphic design in my spare time as well. One of my favorite things to do on the weekends is spend time with my family and watch our favorite movies and relax.
Do you see any upcoming forces that will change advertising in the future?
The increasing use of the internet as cable (watching shows solely online instead of through a cable company) will indeed change the advertising industry, as it already has. With the rise of online viewers, advertising will have to get smarter and more effective to reach this new audience.
Tell us something about yourself that others may not know.
I'm beginning to learn Dutch because my mother's family lives in the Netherlands. I'm also a first generation American according to my mother as she was born in the Netherlands.
What is your top professional aspiration?
To run and produce with a production company or be a part of a post-production company doing visual effects.
What is your biggest professional goal?
I want to be extremely skilled at whatever I end up doing.
What is your biggest personal goal?
My biggest personal goal is to be respected as a successful and talented professional in my field.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up, I want to be a professionally working mother who balances work and family and friends.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years I see myself working professionally as well as raising a family in a city outside of the Midwest.
